If you thought finding a good Asian place in Riga is difficult, try finding a half-decent kebab. On basically every corner there is a Kebabs Fix, Turk-ebab or one of their clones, infesting the food scene like a fungal infection. If rat meat drenched in ketchup is what floats your boat, then great, keep going to those places. But if you take pride in having more genuine stuff to put in your belly, you'll definitely want to try Turkish place Food Box.
”INFESTING THE FOOD SCENE LIKE A FUNGAL INFECTION”
This tiny food joint on Andreja Pumpura iela in Quiet center (they have one on Lāčplēša too) focuses mainly on different types of kebab - kebab in pita bread, kebab in a bread roll, kebab on a plate and the Turkish speciality pide (which is basically a sort of kebab pizza). You can choose between different kinds of meat, various sauces, rice or fries to go with your kebab plate etc. Whatever you choose, Food Box has a very high lowest standard. I have yet to be disappointed, no matter what dish I try. I wouldn't go as far as saying that their food is amazing, but it's definitely tasty, it feels genuine and well-prepared and the servings are quite sufficient even for a big boy like me. For less than €7, you will definitely not leave the place hungry.
Space is tight, and Food Box is often over-crowded with hungry guests, so be prepared to wait a bit for a table. In the summer, though, space is doubled when they open their small terrace on the grass outside.
