I know that you are greeted with the tagline ”A Foreigner's Guide to Restaurants in Riga” when visiting this website, but technically the name is Food in Riga dot com. And since I got the microphone, if I want to talk about joints which are technically not restaurants, who are you to stop me?
One such place which is just too good to not cover here is a small Old Town bar called Krogs Aptieka. Whispers from the rooftops hinted that there are great burgers to find here, and like a fly to a fresh turd, I'm there. Krogs Aptieka is really just a bar, but they have a tiny little menu with some interesting burgers, so me and a fellow foreigner tried the Triple Bacon Cheese Burger (€7) and the Texas Chili Cheese Burger (€7) along with some Hot Chicken Wings with spicy buffalo sauce (€3,50).
”the texas chili burger was a feisty little bugger”
In ascending order of magnificence: the wings were quite good, but if you're like me and just can't stand blue cheese, go with the other dipping sauce. The Texas Chili Burger was a feisty little bugger with more spicy power than I expected. The meat had lots of flavor, good flavor at that, although I would have liked some more veggies and possibly some dressing on it. The decent coleslaw on the side didn't really get my juices flowing. Kudos, though, for the big pile of sliced jalapeños on the side. Although I really liked this burger, the real winner was the Triple Bacon Cheese Burger. And yes, this actually had real, genuine, crunchy bacon! Not the flappy ”bekons”/cow's labia crap you have to suffer at so many places in Riga. This burger had great taste, more veggies than the Chili Burger and was just a very pleasurable experience.
I have to say that Krogs Aptieka was a really pleasant surprise. I'm still waiting for some place in Riga to take burgers to a really high level of quality, but in the meantime, Krogs Aptieka definitely just made it a lot easier to find some good grub.
